sPATIALS3 Project  


sPATIALS3 project - Improvement of agri-food production and innovative technologies for a healthier, safer and sustainable diet – has been funded by Regione Lombardia POR FESR 2014-2020 Asse I – Action I.1.b.1.3 as part of Support for collaborative R&D activities for development of new sustainable technologies, new products and services. The project started in February 2020 and is meant to end in July 2022.


The project strategic target is the creation and the strengthening of a Lombard network, within the agri-food production dedicated to human nutrition, capable of providing technologically advanced solutions to companies in the agri-food sector. The agri-food products, with nutritional properties and effects on the global population, will be specifically optimized for at-risk subjects, i.e. overweight, with neuro-motor problems, cardio-metabolic risk or with peculiar nutritional needs.
Further cornerstones of the project are the advanced metabolomics and proteomics platform and the study of the microbiota, for:
a) The improvement and selection of primary products, so that they are more responsive to new market demands and have a lower environmental impact;
b) guarantee the quality, safety and traceability of the matrices at the origin and after packaging for sustainable consumption;
c) obtain food with high nutritional efficiency;
d) develop processes based on the concept of biorefinery for the production of fine- and / or bulk-chemicals;
e) act on aspects related to nutrition to ensure the well-being of individuals, provide prevention tools and offer support for the management of disabilities of patients in rehabilitation.
Four clinical centers (Villa Beretta, NEMO Center, Bosisio parini Family and INRCA) will allow identified products to be clinically tested on consumers, both in adulthood and in developmental age.
Attention will be paid to the sustainability of products and processes, for example by enhancing alternative plant production and making the best use of resources and technologies to minimize and recover waste where possible and increase the shelf life of products.
An eco-sustainable and innovative packaging will be developed with specific target of increasing the shelf-life of food, minimizing contact with agents that accelerate the degradation processes.
A Decision Support System will help the consumer in the most suitable choice for their food needs (for example, adequate nutrition for post-stroke people or caloric / protein intake for the sportsman).
The project, therefore, will develop on three fundamental pillars of the Smart Specialization Strategy (S3) of the Lombardy Region: Agri-food, Eco-industry, declined according to Green Chemistry, and Health Industry.
